Ironwood Public Safety
Public Safety Concept
In 1980, the City of Ironwood combined the Police Department and the Fire Department, and the new “Public Safety Department” was formed. All officers were cross trained as police officers and firefighters. All officers are sworn police officers by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and are also fully trained to the fire fighter II level. This concept has allowed the department to become more efficient, more cost effective, and more productive.

Hazardous Materials Response Team
Ironwood Public Safety Department was chosen by the Region 8 Homeland Security Board to be the host department for the Region 8 Hazardous Material Team. Region 8 consists of the 15 counties that make up the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
The Ironwood team serves as a resource to all of the UP counties and will also be a mutual aid asset for major disasters and incidents throughout the state and potentially the country.
Prior to the Ironwood team, hazardous materials response had to come from at least 8 hours away to reach Gogebic County. With US2 / M28 being major highways crossing the Upper Peninsula and used as a traffic route for Canadian trucks and major industrial manufacturers, there is a high volume of hazardous materials that pass through our area at any given time.
Having the Ironwood Team will greatly assist in providing for life safety, hazard mitigation, and environmental protection from hazardous materials.
