Downtown Ironwood Ecology Mural Festival
What is it?
In Partnership with the Pleasant Peninsula Mural Festival, the Downtown Ironwood Development Authority will host a week-long mural event in Downtown Ironwood with the goal of beautification of downtown buildings.
This festival will bring Michigan artists, art and education about the ecology of our area together to highlight and educate about the beauty of our natural surroundings.
Buildings selected for the project will be painted with a mural about various species of our area during the first week of September.
Mural Project Description
- Partnering with Pleasant Peninsula Mural Fest out of Grand Rapids.
- Visit: https://www.pleasantpeninsula.org/ for past/current works.
- Installation of up to 4 murals in downtown Ironwood, to be completed the weekend of September 6.
- Each mural will feature a different species important to the Upper Peninsula.
- Each muralist will work with a different environmental educator (ie: Tribal members, Ottawa National Forest, DNR Staff, MSU researchers, MNFI, Wildfire Council, etc).
- Up to 4 muralists will be commissioned to paint; 1 mural coordinator will be commissioned to coordinate the installation.
Dates
- Installation will take place from Monday, September 1st through Saturday, September 6th.
- The Festival Events will take place from Tuesday, September 2nd, through Saturday, September 6th.
Festival Description
- Educational speaker series- Artist & Educator talk about artwork and species.
- First Friday – market, vendors, music, grand reveal of murals Saturday.
- Saturday music & farmed and foraged meal. (Meal will highlight local farmers and producers.
- Promotion and festival advertisement will be geared regionally as well as to larger cities.
- Denver Air will donate 5 tickets for the event for artists and giveaways to fly to the event from Grand Rapids area.
Events & Activities:
The week will boast various events and activities, ranging from conversations with the mural artists and educators about the murals, to kid-friendly activities, live music, vendors and a farmed and foraged dining experience.
